HVAC Systems can be Managed to Maximize Performance and to Save up to 40%
Over 39% of all energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are due to the construction and operation of buildings. Armstrong created Pump Manager Armstrong Fluid Technology, a cloud-based service powered with the IBM Watson IoT(tm), to help customers reduce emissions. It provides predictive maintenance analytics and helps buildings cut down on energy consumption.
Business Challenges
Armstrong was looking to increase pump efficiency beyond the pump. He wanted to assist customers with predictive maintenance by continuous learning and sharing best practices from across different industries and buildings.
Transformation
Armstrong created an intelligent cloud-based performance monitoring service that monitors pump performance and provides real-time insight to assist building owners in maintaining HVAC systems at peak efficiency.

- One of the greatest challenges facing humanity is to reduce technology tv show greenhouse gas emissions.
According to the US Green Building Council, buildings account for around 39% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 30% of global energy consumption. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), is one of the biggest energy users in a building. It accounts for almost 40% of its overall energy consumption and carbon footprint.
Energy efficient HVAC solutions can help buildings reduce their carbon footprint. Energy efficiency measures are a standard practice in new construction. Retrofits to reduce GHG emissions in existing buildings are only expected to be 1 – 2 per cent annually. Why is this so slow? Building owners see the problem as a lack of trust in the proposed solutions, and a low expected return on investment.
He continued, “The second issue was transparency about savings. Although the idea of building efficiency is not new, the market solutions have not created a lot of confidence in owners. The owners were promised a solution in two years and that they would save so much. But that never happened.”
Most building owners have concentrated on retrofitting the chiller, which is the most costly part of an HVAC system, in their efforts to increase energy efficiency. Armstrong however recognized a better way and instead focused on the most basic component of an HVAC system, the pump.
Armstrong Fluid Technology
Armstrong was founded in 1934 in Toronto, Canada. It is a pioneer in the design, engineering, and manufacture of fluid flow equipment for healthcare, education and commercial sectors. Design Envelope technology, optimization and system automation services are some of the offerings. Also, solutions for fire safety, HVAC, plumbing, and plumbing are available. The company has eight manufacturing plants on five continents, employing more than 1,200 people.
